iPods or iPod Touches allow for some great fluency practice. Using the built in Voice Memo app students recorded themselves reading. We reviewed four aspects of fluency with students: self-correction, rate, phrasing/pausing, and intonation. We then provided them with the attached rubric to score their reading. Students listened to their reading several times and gave themselves scores for each area.

For students who needed to focus on one area, the focus area rubric can be used. This is meant to show progress in that area over time.

Students also used the voice memo feature to practice composing answers to open ended questions or to discuss story ideas before writing. Being able to go back to their ideas by listening to the recording over and over helped these students with their writing fluency
